Lowell Massachusetts

Lowell is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA. Lowell is located at the confluence of the Merrimack and Concord rivers and is 20.8 miles from Cambridge and 23.1 miles from Boston. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 105,167. It is the fourth largest city in the state. Lowell and Cambridge are the county seats of Middlesex County. It comprises about fourteen square miles of land.

University of Massachusetts - Lowell
Lowell's elevation is 110 feet above sea level and the average annual temperature is 51.6° F . The average annual precipitation is 42.8 inches of rain and 42.6 inches of snow.
Lowell has several schools of higher learning the largest being the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and Middlesex Community College.


Lowell was once considered the textile capital of the world.
Much of Lowell's downtown, millyards, and canal system were placed on the National Register of Historic

Places and been designated an urban national historical park. It exists today as a reminder of the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution was a period in the late 18th and early 19th centuries when major changes in agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation had a profound effect on the socioeconomic and cultural conditions. The City’s numerous historic districts contain a critical mass of structures from the nineteenth century.The Lowell Canal System provided the framework that shaped the entire development of Lowell and is listed as a National Historic Landmark and is also been designated a Civil and Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Lowell's 6 miles of power canals were built between 1820 and 1850. The Lowell power canal system still remains the largest in the world.
