I had been trying for a couple of years to find just
the right light to photograph the beautiful panoramic view
of the Adirondack High Peaks from Cascade Mountain. I'd been watching
the weather reports closely, and by mid afternoon
on a Saturday in June 2000, realized the conditions were coming together
for some great evening photos, as well as what looked
to be perfect conditions for the morning, too. I quickly pulled together
my camera gear, some bivy equipment,
and food for a night out, and headed on up to the mountain.
The evening light was real nice, but the first light
of dawn was simply spectacular. I shot a full 360° panoramic photograph,
but decided to crop the image for the poster to the most spectacular part
of the view. 26 of the High Peaks are visible on this poster view.
There is a key to the mountains on the poster, as well as a full listing
of all 46 High Peaks with their elevations. This panorama
includes views to the north, east, south, and west... The shadow on the
right is from Cascade itself.
